Mammography is a technique invented to detect and prevent the spread of breast cancer in women. A general ultrasound may not be able to closely detect the presence of cancer or lump in the mammary glands and hence require the evidences from digital mammography or breast imaging and the final test be breast biopsy. Not just the lump but mammography can even detect other abnormal growths in the breasts of the women. Mammary glands are used for milk production in the female physiology and are very essential for child birth and post-delivery nourishment of the child. There is a difference between mammography & digital mammography

Mammography involves usage of low dose x-rays where as digital mammography is a technique that uses solid-state detectors to convert x-rays into electrical signals. Both can confirm the presence of a tumor or cancer in the breast.

A woman must go for mammograms which are initial detectors of cancers in its nascent stages and hence preventable from developing into huge and fatal cancers. Regular mammograms can even detect growth in the breasts that have not fully evolved into tumors.
